Equal opportunity for women and men is anchored in the Swiss Constitution. Despite extensive efforts, however, real equality between women and men has not yet been achieved.

The National Research Programme "Gender Equality" (NRP 60) aims to generate new knowledge about the conditions under which gender equality policy develops and how it is implemented. A further goal is to investigate the effectiveness of the current strategies, programmes, and measures. Research projects should also study policy areas that do not explicitly address gender equality. The research programme also investigates the complex reasons for the persistence of inequalities between men and women. The findings should establish a basis for developing innovative approaches in gender equality policy in Switzerland.

The funding of NRP 60 is CHF 8 million for the planned research period of three years.
