Equal opportunities for men and women: a lot done, a lot still to do

Although gender equality is enshrined in the Swiss Constitution, it has still not been achieved. Yet gender equality creates economic, societal and individual benefits. Equal opportunities must not be imposed top-down. They need to be implemented by all and treated as a task relevant to all areas of political life.

The Federal Council commissioned NRP 60 in 2007. Twenty-one projects studied gender equality between 2010 and 2013 with a total budget of CHF 8 million. The synthesis report summarises the results and makes suggestions as to how gender equality, equal opportunities and freedom of choice for men and women could be enhanced in four main areas:

  • Education
  • Labour market
  • Compatibility of family, education and career
  • Social security
